1. Join or Organise a Supportive Baby-&-Breastfeeding Group Event
-
Attend one of the many events run by Cuidiú branches, HSE, Friends of Breastfeeding etc, which often hold coffee mornings, workshops, talks.
-
If you’re able, host a small meetup with other local mums: share experiences over tea, bring a lactation consultant to speak, or organise a “latch-on” morning.
2. Use Social Media to Share Stories & Normalize the Experience
-
Share a “brelfie” (breastfeeding selfie) or photo, or even a written post about what breastfeeding means for you. This helps others feel less isolated.
-
Use hashtags like the ones used by HSE or Friends of Breastfeeding, e.g. #NationalBreastfeedingWeek, #HSEmychild, #mamasboobiebox to connect with others nationally
3. Self-Care & Celebrate the Journey
-
Buy yourself something small that makes the breastfeeding journey easier or more joyful (e.g. a comfortable nursing bra, a cosy wrap, breast pads, or a good nightdress).
-
Mark a milestone (it might be first feed, week 1, month 3, etc.) with something meaningful (a photo, a journal entry, or even taking time for a massage / relaxing bath).
4. Educate & Advocate
-
Learn and share evidence and facts about breastfeeding — benefits, supports available, breastfeeding laws / rights (e.g. in the workplace, in public). Being informed helps you + helps others.
-
If you feel empowered, speak to local cafés/restaurants, work, or public spaces about making them more “breastfeeding friendly.” For example, display a sign, or ensure privacy or comfortable seating. These initiatives are happening in conjunction with Healthy Ireland.
5. Support Other Mums
-
Volunteer or engage with peer support networks: buddy-systems, voluntary groups like Cuidiú or Friends of Breastfeeding. Just being there for another mum who’s struggling can make a big difference.
-
Donate or help raise awareness or funds for breastfeeding resources in your area (e.g. for lactation consultant services, for breastfeeding groups). Even small donations can help keep support going.
- Finally share our free Breastfeeding Guide with a mum who might need it!
