Best Tips for Latch & Positioning

It can be so confusing trying to figure out latch and your position when breastfeeding.

Follow our tips to help.

Remember some breastfeeding positions may be more comfortable for you, than others.

Find one that works and stick with it, before you begin to change things around.

The most important thing to remember is breastfeeding should not be massively painful, if it is, something is not right, and you may need professional help!

Tip 1: Bring Baby to Breast

Position your baby so their nose is in line with your nipple, not their mouth. This encourages them to tilt their head back slightly and open wide for a deeper latch.

Tip 2: Tummy to Tummy

Ensure your baby’s whole body is facing you —chest against your chest. If their head is twisted, it can affect their latch and swallowing.

Tip 3: Support your Breast and Baby

Use your hand to support your breast in a C-shape hold away from the areola. At the same time, support your baby’s neck and shoulders (not the back of their head) to gently guide them in.

Tip 4: Listen for Swallowing, not clicking

A good latch usually results in quiet sucking and swallowing sounds. If you hear clicking or see your baby slipping off, gently detach and try again to avoid nipple damage.

Tip 5: Breastfeeding should not be painful

If it is, then please seek help from a professional that is trained in breastfeeding, a lactation consultant or midwife.
